Venues for the XXIX Olympic Games

A total of thirty-seven (37) competition venues will be used for the 2008 Olympics. The Olympic Green, a park located in northeastern Beijing, is where the main cluster of the venues (10 venues in total) will be located. Some of the most popular events will be contested in the Olympic Green, such as Athletics, Artistic Gymnastics, Swimming, Water Polo, Tennis, Fencing, Hockey, Handball, Archery and Modern Pentathlon.

The hallmark of the Olympic Green is the National Stadium, site of the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, Athletics and Football finals. This newly built stadium has a capacity of 91,000 spectators and is scheduled for completion in late 2007.

There are a series of seven (7) “Ring Roads” or (beltways as we know them in the US) that transport passengers around the city. The fifth ring road, will be known as “Olympic Avenue” since many of the Olympic venues lie along this route. In the above diagram, the 5th ring road is the outer-most road. When looking at maps of Beijing, one should note that the 1st ring road is non-existent – the
numbering of the roads starts with the 2nd road.
